Staff and parents of children attending a childcare centre in Thorpe Willoughby are pleading for funding to replace the facility’s roof, amid fears it may soon be forced to close.
The replacement of the building’s flat roof, which forced the centre to close for three days last month, is said to be “vital”, with costs projected to be in the region of £13,500. Deputy Manager Nicola Nicholson told the Selby Times: “Despite the building never having failed structurally, it frequently lets in rain water. “Last month, we closed from February 24 to February 26, as the roof partly collapsed and we had to cordon off areas. “The site is now safe, but the roof replacement is absolutely vital for us to keep our centre up and running. “The roof is a flat one, and I believe that decades of standing water have eroded it. “We really are at the point of no return now and are in desperate need of funding.”
The centre is run as a not-for-profit charity and supports many local families with before and after-school sessions, care for toddlers and children’s holiday clubs. Nicola said: “We only close between Christmas and New Year, ours truly is a vital service for so many in the community. “It would such a shame to have to close our doors after decades of working with generations of our village’s children.” The centre has applied for funding grants and seeks to make up the additional cash needed with a dedicated Go Fund Me page - https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-our-preschools-vital-repairs?.
