Selby Abbey Church of England Primary School’s commitment to children’s health and sport has been recognised in government’s School Games Award.
The school said it was “thrilled” to have been presented with a platinum mark award this year - an accolade it will hold for two years. Launched in 2012, the government’s School Games Award is facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward hard-working schools for their commitment to developing sporting competition at their settings and in the community. To qualify for the platinum mark, Selby Abbey CofE Primary School had to hold a gold award for four consecutive years. The school headteacher Mrs Ray said: “I am absolutely over the moon that we have been recognised for this award. “Only a handful of school nationwide have achieved the Platinum Award and I am thrilled that we have been recognised for our commitment to promoting children’s participation in a wide choice of spots, accessible to all.”
The school held a special day to celebrate its milestone this summer, with local sports teams; Phoenix Martial Arts, North Yorkshire Centre for Performing Arts, PE Pro, Malt Shovel Football Club and the Vale of York Athletic Community joining in on the fun. PE lead at the school, Becky Cameron said: “We would also like to thank the Methodist and Reform church who came to our rescue after the weather looked like it was going to put a dampener on the day by allowing us the use of their hall.”
