Al’s staff don’t tyre of helping the community

Time is the most valuable resource to gift for one business in Sherburn-in-Elmet after continuing to make a valuable contribution to its village community.

Earlier this year, when several Covid-19 restrictions lifted across the country, Al’s Tyres, which is based on Milford Road, didn’t just figure out how to rebuild itself from the pandemic - rather, how they could help others rebuild and bounce back quicker too. After thinking about the financial side of charity, the owner of Al’s Tyres, Al Littlewood and business partner, Dean Sedman, concluded that time is the greatest currency that the pair could give back to Sherburn-in-Elmet.

What came next for both Al and Dean was a journey to try and help various charities, groups and organisations across Sherburn by closing down their business and donating their staff to help in the community for half a day each month. Starting the campaign in July, Al’s Tyres has already helped Peter Pan Nursery in its maiden volunteering month and have a whole host of other groups waiting for help. In its most recent donation of time, seven workers from Al’s Tyres visited All Saints Church in Sherburn last Wednesday (August 11) to help trim the grass and help in the graveyard. Despite already helping two community groups in the village so far, Al and Dean are far from content.

The pair are now determined to help as many people as possible and have urged organisations to get in touch. Al said: “Some of these organisations that have been hit the most might get charitable donations and grants, but they do struggle to get people to volunteer and get involved. “As well as getting a chance to give something back, it has been good for us to integrate ourselves into Sherburn-in-Elmet and get to know all of these amazing groups.” To find out more about the community project that Al’s Tyres are running, visit www.facebook.com/alstyreshop/.
